Understanding Canine Cancer

Canine cancer is not one single disease, but a broad group of diseases in which abnormal cells grow without the normal controls that regulate healthy cell growth. Cancer can arise in many different tissues and organs. Malignant cancers can invade surrounding tissues and may spread to other parts of the body, a process known as metastasis.

Dogs can develop many different types of cancer, including lymphoma, mast cell tumours, osteosarcoma and hemangiosarcoma. Because the signs depend greatly on the type, location and extent of the disease, changes can range from new or enlarging lumps to unexplained weight or appetite changes, persistent lameness, weakness, abnormal bleeding or other ongoing changes in health or behaviour.
